Does Our MESSED up World Cause You Anxiety?

by

I want to share a quick story with you. Last night I had a bit of an anxiety attack. Now I don't normally have anxiety attacks. I was on my boat and couldn't figure out why. I realized that I'm a little overwhelmed with the negativity and bullshit going on in the world.

Will there be a nuclear war? There was a shooting somewhere.

We live in extreme times. Extreme politics, extreme religion, extreme suffering, extreme weather, extreme joy. Believe it or not, there could be extreme joy. -- Watch the video

There's extreme negativity and there's extreme positive things in our world -- you just have to find it.

I decided, when I got up today, that I was going to alter my Facebook feed so that I wouldn't be confronted with so much negative bullshit.

It's not that I don't have empathy with people's plight around the world. I have tons of empathy. In fact, that's the problem. I have too much empathy. I take on people's stuff, and I just get overwhelmed with it.

And I think a lot of people are like me --- are you?

If so then your task is to figure out a way to manage your empathy. One way is you limit your social media, negative bullshit intake. This is the challenge that I present to you.

Focus on the positive stuff because there's a lot of extreme joy and beauty in the world.

I mean I'm just here producing this podcast, and I'm walking along a boardwalk at Toronto Island, and from my video you can see there's my bike, my computer in that bag along the trees. That's actually my office today -- such joy!

I'm not making a whole hell of a lot of money today but I'll figure it out. It'll come together.

FOCUS on positive things, and when you focus on positive energy, you attract positive people. It is that law of attraction.

I've said it before. If you think your life sucks, then your life sucks. If you think your life is beautiful, then your life is beautiful. You create your own reality, my friend. You really do.

I was in Burma years ago, and I was amazed on how there was such extreme poverty, and yet people were so friendly and happy. I'm not saying live this Pollyanna life, and I'm not saying they don't struggle. But if you study Buddhism and ancient Buddhist and Zen philosophies, you'll realize that a lot of people's suffering is because of their perception of reality, and their cravings and aversions.

I mean we either move towards or away from something. And it is those attachments to these cravings and aversions that cause a lot of our self-inflicted stress and suffering. And you know, it's not easy to figure out. I don't have the answers yet I'm pretty blessed every single day. And yet I still have anxiety attacks.

Sometimes I wake up in the middle of the night kind of freaked out. Like really freaked out! Somebody said to me the other day...

"Don't you kinda worry you're gonna like, "run out of money 'cause you're spending "more money than you're pulling in? "Sometimes I worry and more often I don't" ....and I said to them, "We'll probably all gonna be dead in like three years or something. On a negative day it's as if  I'm just waiting for the nuclear war to happen.

If you look over there, I'm expecting this big, orange glow back there. And it's the end of the world. And then I stop myself and I go, "Oh my god, Dan! "What kind of bullshit is that? Why do you think about that?" And then I realize that I'm a pretty grounded person. If I'm thinking about that then you're thinking about it, there's a lot of other people thinking about it.  And the media just loves to feed us this stuff.

We truly do live in polarized times, my friend. And you have to control your mind and the bullshit that goes in it.

You create your own reality. And for me, it's about doing what matters to live and work on my own terms as I define success. It's about learning, living, and loving the proud life.

And I will say that a thousand times in my videos. It is my mantra, and I define success as...

I'm successful when I'm enjoying my creativity. I know I'm successful when I'm in the presence of people who appreciate me and I appreciate them. And I know I'm successful when I'm able to share my energy with community however I define community.

And I do offer a coaching session where you and I get to have a conversation where we're talking about your own definition of success, and I'd love to have a chat with you around what is your own personal definition of success because when you're able to articulate your own personal definition of success, that  definition then becomes the compass that governs the decisions that you make in life. It is the compass that says do this and don't do that.

And so it is critically important for you to be able to define your own personal definition of success. And I encourage you to connect with me. Send me an email. Connect with me on Facebook. Let's start the dialogue. And if you're in another country and you can't even afford this stuff, fine, we'll do it for free because cause for me, it's not about making the money. It's about satisfying my five, core human needs which is a talk for another time.
